The Pottawattamie County Conservation Board is announcing a hiring process for the
position of Environmental Educator. This is a full-time, exempt position and is based out
of the Hitchcock Nature Center. Pottawattamie County is an equal opportunity employer.
Essential Job Duties:
The Environmental Educator is responsible for assisting in the development, coordination
and presentation of Pottawattamie County Conservation Boards (PCCB) environmental
education programs. The Environmental Educator is also responsible to serve as the county
membership and promotions coordinator. For additional job duties, see attached job
description.
Minimum Qualifications:
Bachelors degree in Education, Environmental Education, Nature Interpretation,
Environmental Science or related field required.
Must possess a valid drivers license at the time of hire and maintain it throughout
the course of employment.
Must successfully obtain CPR and basic first aid certification within a time frame
established by the employer. Certifications shall be maintained throughout the course of
employment.
Applicant must successfully pass a pre-employment medical exam which includes a drug test
and background check.

JOB DESCRIPTION
POSITION TITLE:
Environmental Educator
REPORTS TO: Program
Manager
SUPERVISES: None
EMPLOYMENT STATUS: Full-time, FLSA Exempt
PURPOSE OF POSITION:
The Environmental Educator is responsible for assisting in the development, coordination
and presentation of Pottawattamie County Conservation Boards (PCCB) environmental
education programs. The Environmental Educator is also responsible to serve as a county
education promotions coordinator.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Present environmental education programs to key audiences, including area schoolchildren
and the general public countywide, with an emphasis on visitors to the Loess Hills Lodge
interpretive facility.
Serve as the County Education Promotions Coordinator and manage, direct and execute all
activities related to events and programs.
Plan and oversee the development of informational brochures, displays, fliers, news
releases, media kits, and bookmarks to promote PCCB.
Maintains environmental education materials and equipment, including the annual inventory.
Responsible for the creation, coordination, layout and publication of the PCCB newsletter.
Plan, coordinate and oversee Rusty events, such as county fairs and parades, as well as
associated handout materials.
Working closely with the Pottawattamie County IT department, oversee the PCCB website and
provide editorial and design expertise.
Serve as the gift shop coordinator for the Loess Hills Lodge; maintain inventory and sales
database.
Assist with supervising summer interns and volunteers as needed.
Stay current and work collaboratively with the PCCB education team to ensure excellence
and maintain continuous improvement of the PCCB environmental education programs and
projects.
Collaborate with the PCCB education team in the implementation of the environmental
education strategic plan, philosophies and mission.
Work effectively with teachers, students, volunteers and the public in general in the
implementation of PCCB environmental education programs and projects.
Participate in county special events (e.g. PCF banquet, Chamber nights, Expos) as assigned
by Program Manager and/or Executive Director.
Articulate the Pottawattamie County Conservation Board, Hitchcock Nature Center, Loess
Hills Lodge, and environmental education missions to the community.
Assist with new projects and perform other tasks as assigned by the Program Manager and/or
Executive Director.
MARGINAL FUNCTIONS:
Perform other duties as directed or as the situation dictates.
ESSENTIAL KNOWLEDGE, EXPERIENCE AND ABILITY:
Demonstrated ability to coordinate, develop, and conduct environmental educational
programs (under supervision); previous program teaching experience preferred.
Knowledge of and ability to utilize field identification procedures for plants, flowers,
birds, mammals, amphibians, reptiles, and other natural resources.
Knowledge of and ability to plan and participate in outdoor recreational activities
including but not limited to hiking, canoeing, and fishing.
Knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, Publisher, and other Windows based programs or
equivalent.
Competency in database management as well as publishing software, such as Illustrator,
Adobe Photoshop, or equivalent.
ESSENTIAL KNOWLEDGE, EXPERIENCE AND ABILITY (continued):
Familiarity with publication layout and graphic design preferred.
Motivation as a self-starter, able to demonstrate a superior work ethic and have the
ability to multi-task, be detail oriented, plan efficiently and to represent PCCB, HNC,
LHL and the Environmental Education program enthusiastically.
Excellent written and verbal communications skills; effectiveness as a strong team player
and public speaker; professionalism, tact and sensitivity with the public, staff, and
volunteers.
Possess exceptional organizational skills as well as time management ability.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisors, fellow
employees, various organizations and the general public.
Must have flexible schedule with the ability to work evenings, limited holidays and
weekends, as required, and the ability to travel, including some overnight travel.
ESSENTIAL EDUCATION, CERTIFICATION, AND/OR LICENSES:

responsibilities do require the individual to work outside on a recurrent basis (daily
throughout all seasons) in a variety of weather and conditions.
Leadership and instruction of programs requires the individual to be able to hike, canoe,
kayak, and conduct other physical outdoor recreational activities. Specific vision
abilities required by the job include close vision, distant vision, color vision,
peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
Work hours may occasionally be required before or after business hours. The noise level in
this job is usually moderate. The analytical and personal communications nature of this
work also requires an individual who possesses good visual memory and discrimination,
auditory memory and discrimination, and significant interactive communication skills.

The instructor is responsible for fostering student learning in resource management,
ecological restoration, and advocating the
principles of land stewardship. Teaching emphasis will be in the following courses:
wildlife management, plants of the wild, natural
resource appreciation, park maintenance, park and recreation administration, leadership in
agriculture, and equipment operations.
Required course load is 15 credit hours per semester. Teaching responsibilities may
include courses outside the program-specific assignment
(e.g., math, botany for horticulture, and other similar courses). Must evaluation, record,
and report student achievement and
progress in assigned courses in accordance with department, division, and college policies
and procedures. Must be responsible for
meeting the goals and objectives of an individual Professional Preparation Plan as
outlined in the Colleges Quality Faculty Plan.

resource management, forestry, or closely
related field and three years of recent full-time employment experience required. Some
